Whitaker Park is named after William Henry Whitaker who had settled in Sarasota on the bay in the 1840's near what we know today as Indian Beach. Whitaker had 200 acres of land for farming cattle, which eventually became a provision for Confederate soldiers in the Civil War who needed food. Whitaker was also in a militia unit, himself.  He had married and had 8 children, all of whom he had raised to adulthood. When their first home was burned down, he and his wife built their second home on what is today's 12th Street, beside the family cemetery. When Gillespie arrived to Sarasota, of whom is responsible for creating the city of Sarasota, he and his Scottish colonists had the help of Whitaker who provided shelter and food circa 1886.

Today, Whitaker Park (not to be confused with the actual city park of Whitaker Gateway Park on the bay) is a newer community built by the infamous Ashton Woods, a builder who is ranked among the top builders in America. This community is located just North of Fruitville Road, on Richardson Road. This a convenient location because of it's quick access to I-75. The prices in Whitaker Park start at about $275,000 and go up depending on the build.
