LWR Garden Club to sponsor Community Garage Sale
The Lakewood Ranch Garden Club (LWRGC) will sponsor the Lakewood Ranch Community Garage Sale this year, as one of their many community service projects. Date for the Spring garage sale is Saturday, April 2, 2016 – 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, April 3, 2016. Neighborhoods involved are Summerfield, Riverwalk, and Greenbrook. The LWRGC will post signs at entrances to all participating neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the other HOAs have declined to participate.
If you would like to participate, you must fill out the registration form at LWR Town Hall, 8175 Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, along with your $5.00 fee by Thursday, March 31. The LWR Town Hall will give you a receipt in turn. Please have the receipt posted within your yard or available for proof of registration. You may pay by cash or check (made out to LWR Garden Club). If you do not register before March 31, a LWRGC member will stop by and collect a late fee of $10.00 on the morning of the garage sale. You will know them by their badges.
Other service projects the LWRGC are involved with: during the holidays we donated over 50 Gift Basket to the needy at Still Point House and over 50 artistic creations for recipients at Meals on Wheels. We maintain a Florida Friendly Garden behind LWR Town Hall for residents to learn more about plants they can grow in Florida. We donate to the National Garden Club’s Penny Pines Program. A conservation project to help replant trees damaged by fire or other natural catastrophe events in Florida. Our donation helps to plant new trees in the Osceola National and John Bethea State Forests. We donate to the Coral Restoration Foundation in the Florida Keys to help grow Staghorn and Elkhorn coral to save our reefs.
The LWRGC is proud to focus on our next generations (children). We help to sponsors children to attend many of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs (FFGC) Programs. Wekiva Youth Camp is a nature camp, one-week sessions during June and July for students in grades 3 – 8, in Wekiva Springs State Park. The student learns nature study, conservation, and protection of our environment for the future of our state and our planet. The camp is accredited by the American Camp Association.
Earth’s Environment through Knowledge Conference (SEEK), at Wakulla Springs State Park in June 2016, for high school students (grade 9 – 12). The conference focuses on critical environmental issues: climate change, energy conservation, alternative energy, and sustainability; water quality and quantity (water pollution and water conservation); and loss of wildlife habitat due to deforestation and development. They visit St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and participate in the Costal Explorer Program.
College Scholarships available to seniors entering college and for all levels of college coursework. National Garden Clubs, Inc. Poster Contest. Children from 1st – 5th grade are invited to draw a poster of Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl of their understanding of wildfire prevention and basic environmental conservation principles. The LWRGC collects Labels for Education to support the above programs, tabs from cans to help support the Ronald McDonald House, one gallon containers, and wine corks to help the local 4-H youth programs.
The LWRGC meets once a month at LWR Town Hall, the second Monday of each month, (9:30 a.m. social, 10:00 a.m. meeting, and 11:00 a.m. a program around gardening. Some months we visit nurseries or other locations dealing with gardening. Our next meeting is March 14, 2016. We are carpooling from LWR Town Hall at 9:15 a.m. to visit Rob Branch private garden.
